SMS sender types
The sender type determines what the recipient sees as the sender of the SMS. Which types you can use depends on the recipient's country — see the overview in the price list.
Sender types
| type | what the recipient sees | keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| System number | A sender you cannot choose — a long number, a short code or text. | We do not guarantee the form of the sender. |
| Short code | A short number, for example 2576, that you cannot choose. | |
| Text sender ID | Text instead of a number, such as your company name. | At most 11 characters, registration required in some countries. See Text sender ID. |
| Own number sender ID | Your phone number. The recipient can reply or call you on it. | You first need to verify the number in My numbers. |
| Mobile Connect | The number of the SIM in your phone — the SMS goes out on your own tariff. | Requires the Mobile Connect app. |
Text sender ID
- At most 11 characters.
- Letters without accents, digits, space and the characters
-,.,_. - It must contain at least one letter — digits alone are not allowed.
In some countries the text sender ID has to be registered first. You can tell by the Registration tag when choosing the type; the procedure is described in Text sender ID registration.
When a sender type cannot be used
If the chosen type is not available in the recipient's country, or cannot be used — for example an unverified own number or an invalid text sender ID — the message is sent from the system number. It is still sent, just with a different sender.
Before launching a campaign, check in the price list which sender types are available in your recipients' countries.
Two-way communication
Replies are not possible with every type in every country. Whether a type allows them is shown by the Two-way SMS property when choosing it, or in the price list. You will find replies in the Inbox; read more about two-way SMS messaging.
Sender per country
When you send to several countries, you can set a different sender for each — for example a different text sender ID for Czechia and for Slovakia. This is what sender ID profiles are for:
- In the left menu of the portal, expand SMS & Viber messaging and choose Sender ID profiles.
- Click
Add new profile, enter a name and clickCreate. - Open the created profile, select a country and click
Next. - Select the sender type and click
Next. Only types available in the country are offered. - Review the Profile summary and click
Save. - Repeat steps 3–5 for other countries.
For each type you can see whether it supports Unicode and two-way SMS in the given country.
Choosing the sender in a campaign
In the campaign editor you set the default sender — a generic sender type or your own sender ID profile. You can then add exceptions for individual countries. Only own numbers verified for the wallet the campaign is sent from are offered.
Over the API you set the sender type on the message, see SMS object.
