Dedicated SMS number and receiving replies
Two-way SMS lets your customers reply to your message. You receive the reply in the Inbox in the portal, on a webhook, or directly on your phone. It depends on the country and the sender type. Below you will find your options and when a dedicated number makes sense.
What are my options for two-way SMS?
| option | where the reply goes | keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Shared number (system number or short code where it supports two-way SMS) | Inbox and webhook | No monthly fee. You share the number with other senders. |
| Dedicated number | Inbox and webhook | A number just for you. Monthly fee, possibly an activation fee. |
| Own number | Your phone | The recipient sees your number and can also call you. Replies only go to your phone. |
| Mobile Connect | Your phone and the portal | The SMS goes out from the SIM in your phone. Replies reach the portal when Process SMS replies is on in the app. |
Whether a sender type supports two-way SMS in a country is shown by the Two-way SMS property when you choose it, or in the price list. A text sender ID does not allow replies.
Where do replies arrive?
- Inbox: in the portal under
Reports>Inbox. More in Inbox. - Webhook: replies go to the same address as delivery reports. The setup is described in Webhook.
- Phone: with your own number, the reply goes straight to your number and does not reach the Inbox. With Mobile Connect, it arrives on your phone and in the portal.
When does a dedicated number make sense?
- You want customers to always see the same number that belongs only to you.
- You need to match replies to a specific service, application or branch.
- Customers should also be able to call the number.
The conditions for a dedicated number vary by country and operator. We will go through them with you before you order the number.
How do I order a dedicated number?
Write to us through the contact form with the subject Ask for price and include:
- the country and, if relevant, the operators,
- what you need the number for: replies, calls or both,
- an estimate of messages per month,
- whether you want one number for all operators or only some of them.
We will send you the options and the price for your country. Once activated, select the number in a sender ID profile.
Why are replies not arriving?
- The message went out with a sender type that does not support replies in the country. Check the price list and the
Senderlabel in History. - You send from your own number. Replies then go to your phone, not to the Inbox. With Mobile Connect, check that
Process SMS repliesis on in the app. - You expect replies on a webhook, but it is not set up or does not respond. See Delivery reports and replies do not reach my webhook.
If none of this applies, send us the ID of the original message and a screenshot from the phone showing the time and text of the reply.
